Pourquoi je ne peux pas jouer Alice? / La lumière divine d'Alice / Alice d'Eden - Chapitre V : Les conseils d'un Serpent : Part of a workshop at the Atelier Gagarine / Ecole des Arts in which I made three works. The theme was based on a 19th century photograph of the real "Alice of Wonderland", Alice Liddell, by the author of the book, Lewis Carroll.
The divine light of Alice : Playing off of "The divine light of God" and the stain glass windows in a church. Implying Lewis's admiration, love and/or infatuation for Alice since he photographed her often. Material: transparent colored paper, transparent photograph printout & plastic seal.
Alice of Eden - Chapter V : Advice from a Snake : Playing off of Adam & Eve in "The Garden of Eden" and combining it with the 5th chapter in the book, "Advice from a caterpillar". I replaced the caterpillar on the mushroom with a snake (temptation) and I added an apple with a worm (change, death...). There is also the face of Alice sleeping and the ground beneath her that appears to come alive with it's own strange forms (a yellow eye...more bloody worms...). Both stories refer to biting into an element that they can't resist, whether it's out of curiosity, desire or for escape (Alice & Lewis). This piece is deliberatly Kitsch ;-) Material: Raku clay (fired traditional not Raku), slip decoration, enamel, a little of acrylic paint, old curtain fringe for Alice's hair, old suitcase, mirror & fake plastic leaf deocrations.
Why can't I play Alice? USA traditional & Non-traditional casting timeline in TV & Film : 1950-1979 / 1980-2021 / 2020 - ? : A play on words ; to play a card game and to play in a theater, film or TV performance. I was surprised seeing a real photograph of Alice and finding out that she had short dark hair and not long blond hair. So I began reseaching Alice's typecast in USA film & TV performances. From the 50's on, Walt Disney's white girl blond hair has dominated the industry. Around the 80's we start seeing white girls with brown or red hair. Then in 2020 we see our first black girl play Alice in Come Away. Also I used symbol's of the times; 80's Pacman & blue background, 2020 Twitter bird & green background. Material: photograph & other image printouts (Alice, Cheshire Cat & Mickey Mouse), colored paper, colored pencils & black & mirror-like cardboard background.
